Yoga Teacher Training for Veterans and First Responders


200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training for Veterans and First Responders.

This Yoga Teacher Training program is specifically designed for Veterans and First Responders focusing on the needs and gifts of this population.
SWIHA’s classes are approved by the State of Arizona Department of Veteran Services for GI Bill benefits.

Yoga training is a vital tool for first responders fighting daily battles and for veterans recovering from operational stress and other deployment-related issues. Yoga calms the sympathetic nervous system which reacts to distress by raising blood pressure, quickening breath rate, flooding the body with stress hormones and creating the fight or flight response. Equally, yoga supports the parasympathetic nervous system which allows for steadiness, focus and wellbeing, lowering blood pressure and slowing the breath. A regular yoga practice has been proven effective in providing multiple physiological benefits:

  • Gaining strength, focus and flexibility
  • Improving digestion
  • Enhancing blood circulation
  • Improving sleep
  • Reducing stress and anxiety
  • Managing unhealthy habits


This program is taught by veteran and Yoga Teacher Training Instructor Duane Armitage who served for three tours of combat duty in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. Duane earned the Commander of the Pacific Fleet commendation for his involvement in combat operations in the gulf of Tonkin. Duane served in the Phoenix Police Department then upon retirement completed Yoga Teacher training at Southwest Institute of Healing Arts and Inner Vision Yoga’s Master program. Armitage is a Yoga Gong Master, creator of Hatha-Gong™ Yoga and Yoga Teacher Training Instructor.

Graduates of this program can skillfully and effectively teach yoga to their community. The course is based on our own unique yoga teacher training curriculum and includes instruction in and practice of the resources by which yoga enriches life on many levels:

  • Clarity, reflection, self-observance and integrity
  • Breath control techniques and breathing exercises
  • Mindful movement and the postures practiced in yoga
  • Focus, concentration and contemplation
  • Guided meditation, rest and deep relaxation

Students in our Yoga Teacher Training programs receive unlimited complimentary studio yoga classes at our Spirit of Yoga Studio while enrolled.
